Sermon Outline: “The Power of His Name”

I. Names Carry Destiny and Meaning

  • Human Labels vs. Divine Identity: Illustrating through the story of choreographer Gillian Lynne—who was labelled a “slow learner” as a child until a doctor realized she was a dancer—Pastor Rhonda emphasized that believers must reject negative worldly labels (failure, addict, bankrupt) and embrace who God says they are (00:45:55, 00:47:41).

  • Rightly Conceiving God’s Character: Quoting A.W. Tozer (“What comes into our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us”), Pastor Rhonda urged the congregation to align their view of God with His true, revealed nature rather than viewing Him as punitive, harsh, or a cosmic Santa Claus (00:49:35, 00:52:05).

II. How God Introduces Himself (Exodus 34:5–9)

  • The Setting at Mount Sinai: Following Israel’s sin with the golden calf, Moses interceded for the nation and asked to see God’s glory (00:52:39, 01:00:13).

  • Hidden in the Cleft of the Rock: God placed Moses in the cleft of the rock—a prophetic picture of believers hidden in Jesus Christ (00:53:32).

  • The Self-Proclaimed Nature of God: Descending in the cloud, God proclaimed His own name as The Lord, The Lord God, merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in goodness and truth (00:56:04, Exodus 34:6).

III. The Matchless Name of Jesus

  • The Answer to the Ancient Question: Resolving the question posed in Proverbs 30:4 (“What is His name, and what is His Son’s name?”), the angelic announcement to Mary and Joseph revealed the Son’s name: Jesus (Jehovah is Salvation) (00:43:03, 01:11:31, Matthew 1:21).

  • Authority Above All Names: Citing Philippians 2:9–11, Pastor Rhonda declared that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (01:13:45).

  • Jesus Is Enough: Worldly success, accolades, and experiences can never satisfy the human heart; ultimate fulfillment, healing, and peace are found exclusively in the name of Jesus (01:16:40, 01:17:45).
